Raising cane and funds for charity

Local gardeners didn't let Covid-19 stop them from raising hundreds of pounds for local carers - and they even managed to find a safe way to hand over the cheque.

Members of Wellow & District Horticultural Society devised an innovative way to present a cheque for £789.25 to Carers’ Centre treasurer, Gordon Westwood, by using a bamboo cane normally used for growing runner beans.

The money was raised from a virtual plant sale, organised by Rob Greig, and was presented at a small socially-distanced ceremony by the society’s chair, Bridget Woollen.

We are so grateful to Wellow & District Horticultural Society for this generous and much needed donation. The lockdown has made life harder for the thousands of unpaid carers across BaNES. This donation will help us to continue supporting them through this crisis.
