Fiona's Story

“Volunteering has helped me a lot, it makes me feel useful and valuable, and I’ve met some wonderful people”

“Volunteering has helped me a lot, it makes me feel useful and valuable, and I’ve met some wonderful people”

Our incredible Wellbeing Volunteer, Fiona tells us why she offers her time and support to volunteer at The Carers' Centre.

Fiona joined The Carers' Centre over 10 years ago for support. She was pleased to be around others who understood the challenges that can come with caring for someone.

She had to leave her job to be a full-time carer to her husband, John after he suddenly had a stroke. She remembers the overwhelming and exhausting feelings in those first moments of her caring role.

"It was difficult just getting out of bed, but I did, visiting John twice a day. I was determined to be brave."

She now wants to reach out and help others who may be going through something similar by volunteering for The Carers' Centre.

"It enables me to give back what I have received, so much help, support and friendship at The Carers' Centre"

Fiona has volunteered at The Carers' Centre for many years taking on lots of different projects and building her skills. From hands-on gardening to leading a regular Carer Café to improve the wellbeing of our community.
