Pop Up Cafés Combat Loneliness

The Carers’ Centre is expanding its neighbourhood carer cafés thanks to new funding. The cafés are part of a broader effort by the charity to reduce loneliness and isolation amongst family carers.

The cafés are extremely popular, especially the monthly café kindly hosted by Mardon’s Social Club in Westfield. This offers the chance for people to drop in, have a hot drink, chat and meet other carers from their area. This creates real, meaningful connections — with some attendees meeting up outside of the café & keeping in touch via WhatsApp.

Other cafés are currently ongoing in Bath (Combe Down), Bishop Sutton and Keynsham (see all the details of cafes at the bottom of this article).

Loneliness is a real challenge for carers. They can feel trapped at home, with little or no social life or relationships as the needs of the person they look after is such a priority.

Chief Executive David Trumper says:

“Our cafés are aimed at connecting carers together. One carer reconnected with an old friend who they had lost touch with when their caring role became full-time. Finding friends and feeling less alone helps carers feel more supported and this in turn makes it easier for them to carry out their caring role.

"We’re delighted that with support from the People’s Postcode Trust, HM Government and National Lottery players we will be setting up over 20 cafés in the next 2 years.”

Carers at our café in Mardon’s have said the café is their lifeline and is the only break they feel able to take from their caring responsibilities. As well as time to chat, the cafés sometimes offer activities and entertainment – with Absolutely Elton performing to over 40 people before Christmas!

The Carers’ Centre is keen to hear from carers who would like to see a pop up café in their local neighbourhood. If you have a suggestion for a new café, or if you’d like to find out more about your local café please ring 0800 0388 885.
