A national day to highlight the rights of carers throughout the UK is being marked by a major event, hosted by the Carers’ Centre Bath and North East Somerset.
Carers’ Rights Day is celebrated this year on December 3rd, and The Future of Carers’ Services event is attracting carers from throughout the area who want to have their say in how the forecasted spending cuts will affect them.
Jo Grobler, from the Carers’ Centre, said, “Carers’ Rights Day is about raising awareness of the needs of carers. Carers want, and are entitled to, the same life chances that other people enjoy - good health, financial security, the right to a family life, opportunities to work and pursue their own interests. But the reality for many carers is vastly different. Carers’ Rights Day raises awareness of the needs of carers with policy makers and professionals across the country.”
Keynote speaker at the event is Malcolm Hanney, Deputy Leader of the Council and Chairman of NHS Bath and North East Somerset. “We hope that bringing Councillor Hanney together with our carers will help to plan the future for vital support services for carers in the area,” said Jo.
The Carers’ Centre works to support the 16,255 carers in Bath and North East Somerset, providing information, advice, counselling, help with benefits and breaks away from caring.
“The Carers Centre works all over the area; we have a range of support groups, including one for carers with learning disabilities. We provide a comprehensive events programme to give carers the breaks they need and have a service that helps identify people who may not realise they are carers, bringing help, advice and support directly to them.
The Future of Carers’ Services event is being held at Bath Racecourse, Lansdown Road on December 3rd 2010.
