Carers All Aboard!

Lesley Williams who cares for her husband, Brian, with Cheryl Thomas from the Carers’ Centre.

Carers enjoyed a day at sea aboard Brunel’s ss Great Britain on a day trip to Bristol organised by the Carers’ Centre. Nearly fifty people visited the beautifully restored ship, which has award-winning access facilities installed.

“Many of those who come along to our events have mobility problems, so we always visit the venues beforehand to ensure full accessibility,” said Peggy Nethercott from the Carers’ Centre. “The ss Great Britain has great access for people with disabilities, and gives free entry for carers.”

“It’s so lovely to have a day out,” said Julie Vangorph from Keynsham, who is cared for by her husband, Dennis. “We used to do so much together, but since I had my stroke, getting around is a real problem. Dennis does everything for me; I don’t know what I’d do without him. Carers’ Centre events give us the opportunity to relax and enjoy something exciting together.”

“Many carers experience a life of ill-health, isolation and loneliness,” added Peggy. “Carers’ Centre events and activities are free, have transport provided and give carers a well-deserved break along with the person they care for.”
